When the producer of The Acoustic Philly 1st, 3rd & 4th Monday Series at The Raven Lounge, Tom Rader saw that the midnight open mic he created to close each Monday could hardly contain the hordes of musicians looking for a spotlight, Acoustic Philly and venue owner Jon Hunter decided to create a completely new Tuesday night open mic. Todd Chaefsky who just finished up his five-year tenure as mic host at Dawson Street, was the perfect bet. Chaefsky brought his Manyunk and Northern Liberties (he tends bar at Azure) to an intimate, but electrifying atmosphere.
The idea worked. Center City got its first Tuesday open mic in ions. Todd, set up in the downstairs bar, opens up with covers that he sings with the same soulful vocals with which he fronts his band, Off-Duty Superheroes (whose guitarist, Brett Morgan, is no stranger to this night). It is not hard to get three to four songs out of a set. The bar does well with its parched musicians and Eastern European regulars. It's an easy-going spot. Beata, the bartender, will speak to you in Polish!
Open mic Tuesday nights. No featured acts. Sign-up is at 9 p.m. Just enough space for small drum kit.
